Tutorial Tuesday & Linky Party - Ruffled Fall Hand Towels for Under $2

Hello there lovely bloggers!

So, you guys know I have been like crazy busy lately, working on my big order. Since I'm still trying to squeeze in projects where I can (if only to keep my sanity!!), I thought I would resurrect a tutorial from the past. Of course, I re-made the project to be a little more "Fall-ish" and to show you that I'm not cheating over here, haha!

~ Dressed Up "Fall" Hand Towels ~

What do you think? Pretty cute huh? Not your "traditional" fall decor, but somehow it just feels right.

I don't know what it is about these towels, but people love them. They're inexpensive to make, super duper easy, and totally customizable depending on what you have laying around in your scrap pile.

Okay... so I see why it's #1. ;)

Ready for the tutorial??

~ Dressed Up Hand Towels ~

My fabric was a little scrap left over from a jelly roll, ribbon was a scrap from my white felt wreath, and the lace stuff a scrap from a ribbon scrap pack I bought at Hobby Lobby ages ago. You don't need much of anything to do this project, these particular towels are only 15" wide to give you an idea.

First, lay your pieces out across the short side of your towel to make sure they are long enough with a bit leftover at each end to fold under and hem. I left about an inch on each end.

{UPDATE: If you're doing the ruffled version like my new set, use about twice the length of fabric as I mentioned above, so that you have plenty of ruffle room. Just run the top edge of the strip through your sewing machine on the longest stitch length, and it will ruffle right up before your eyes.}

I started with my fabric since I knew I wanted it on the bottom. I planned to sew the ribbon and the lace over the top of the raw edges of the fabric so I wouldn't have to do any more hemming than necessary.

I folded under and pinned the edges down first, then used the wonky little zig-zag stitch

to attach it to the towel. Clean edges, pretty little ziggy zaggy.

{UPDATE: no need to baste down the sides of the fabric if you're using a ruffle...

just tack it down along the top edge of the ruffle and let it ruffle away at the edges.}

Next, I pinned and basted down the long edges. I know I'm going to be attaching the ribbon and lace

over the fabric, so I mostly just need it to stay down and in place. The real reinforcing will come later.

Now more pinning for the lace...

{Seriously, what is that stuff? I have no idea what to call it, so I'm just going with lace for now.}

And again with the wonky zig zag stitch to make sure this stays in place and can be machine washed.

I did the same thing for the ribbon on top that I did for the fabric:

Pinned and basted on both the top and bottom long edge.

Somehow I managed to miss taking the pic on this one so you'll just have to use your imagination, haha!

Iron out any wrinkles, and ta-da! Pretty little dish towel!

They're SO easy, and you already have an extra towel, so why not make it a pair?

Two is better than one anyway, I think. :)

Since I made these two, I've been digging around in my scrap box for other coordinating colors to make more. I could seriously solve my entire house-wide towel problem with what I find in my scrap box. :)

But wouldn't they make great gifts? Housewarming parties, hostess gifts, wedding shower, holidays...

Good morning all!! I just wanted to pop in and share this video with you all. I know so many of you are homeschooling your kids, and many more plan to (as do I). So naturally, when I heard about this documentary being made all about the benefits of homeschooling I had to share!

It's so wonderful to see such an honest, practical take on homeschooling with real interviews with actual homeschooling families. I'm sure (as most documentaries do) they will be examining both sides, but I've never seen something with such positive energy representing this lifestyle.

I know everyone has a different take on this subject, especially in the mainstream, but I think it's a wonderful opportunity to provide my children with a diverse and well-rounded education based on truth, creativity, life experiences, and discovery rather than the pre-packaged "one-size-fits-all" method the public school system seems to be pushing these days.

Tutorial Tuesday & Linky Party - A Trio of Favorite Recipes

Good morning everyone! I am super-duper busy with a rather large order right now, so you'll have to forgive me for cheating out a little bit this week with recipes rather than sewing, etc. ;)

However, these ARE 3 recipes that I have had earmarked to share with you all since they were ones that I found shortly after moving. Things were hectic, but I knew they would be great ones to share! So here are three of our new favorite recipes from this summer...

Bird's Nest Breakfast Cups

Salad-in-a-Jar

Homemade Cheese Crackers (a.k.a. Cheez-Its)

Bird's Nest Breakfast Cups:

These have quickly become a weekend favorite. I make an entire pan full and then the hubby has a yummy, wholesome breakfast to grab and take with him as he's running out the door at the crack of dawn. Yay for cooking once a week! ;)

1 24 oz. bag of shredded hash browns
2 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
2 tbs oil (I use olive oil)
1/3 cup shredded cheddar
Bacon bits or 8=10 pieces of cooked bacon, crumbled
Eggs
Extra shredded cheddar
Muffin tin

Take your bag of hash browns and mix in the salt, pepper, oil and 1/3 cup shredded cheese.
Divide amongst the cups in your muffin tin, making sure to grease tin beforehand.
Bake hash browns at 425 degrees for 15-18 minutes or until toasty.
Once they're finished, take them out and lower the temp of the oven to 350 degrees.
Crack an egg into each of the cups
Top with bacon and a sprinkle of extra cheese
Bake at 350 degrees for 13-16 minutes (or until the eggs are as firm as you like them).
Slide a knife along the edges to remove from pan when cooled.

Notes:

I like to break the yolks in my eggs a bit once I put them into the hash brown cups
When I cheat on these, I use the Oscar Meyer Bacon pieces found in the "salad dressing" section of the grocery store. They're the closest thing to fresh bacon I can find, and all-natural. :)
You can also experiment with ham, sausage, and veggies to make them your own!

Salad-In-A-Jar:

Now, these aren't so much of a recipe as a technique. I had been seeing this idea all over the place for awhile, and thought I should give it a try for keeping my lettuce fresh. It WORKS.

1 Head (or bag) of lettuce
12 oz. to 16 oz. mason jars (depending on how large you like your salad, or if you like to share!)
Paper towels or paper napkins
Salad toppings of your choice

Wash jars and set them out to dry
Wash and chop head of lettuce
Stuff jars with lettuce (the fuller, the better)
Dampen a paper towel and fold it up small enough to fit into the mouth of the jar.
Lay paper towel over the top of lettuce and secure lid.
Turn upside down and store in the fridge for up to a month!!
When you're ready to eat, throw out the paper towel and prep as you like!

Notes:

If you have enough space in your jars you can top your salad while still in the jar and have an easy lunch to-go, or great solution to salad at parties!

Homemade Cheese Crackers:

From goldfish to cheez-its and everything in between, cheese crackers are always a hit with kids and adults alike. Why not make some fresh that are filled with all-natural ingredients instead of preservatives and chemicals like the store bought kind?

1½ cups (6 oz) grated extra-sharp Cheddar cheese
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened and cut into pieces
¾ cup flour, plus more for dusting
½ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon milk

Preheat oven to 350˚.
Put everything except the milk in a food processor. Pulse the processor, 5 seconds at a time, for about 5 or 6 times, until the dough is in coarse crumbs.
Add the milk and process until the dough gathers together in a ball.
Roll the dough out on a floured board with a rolling pin that has been floured until it is about 1/8 inch thick.
Cut the dough into 1-inch squares with a sharp knife or pizza cutter. You can put a bit of flour on the blade of the knife to keep it from sticking. Use a toothpick or skewer to poke a hole in the center of each cracker.
Place the crackers at least ¼ inch apart on parchment paper on a baking sheet.
Bake for 12 – 15 minutes until the edges are just starting to brown.
Put the baking sheet on a rack and let the crackers cool completely.
Eat! Or store in a covered container or ziploc to eat within a few days.

Notes:

Substitute other cheeses for the cheddar for a different snack every time! I've used swiss (Jarlsberg seems to work best) and colby jack, both with great results!
I have a gas oven and it seems to take a little longer to get them nice and toasty around the edges. Mine usually take about 18 minutes.

Good morning everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and are bright-eyed and ready for a new week! No? Bleary-eyed, hovering over a cup of coffee? Ok, I'll give you that, but I've got something to perk you right up...

I am excited to introduce to you my friend, Erica who has the cutest bow & bottle cap shop! She is here visiting with us today (mostly because I wanted to show her off) to tell us a little bit about herself and her shop. And because she is such a doll, she has also offered up a GIVEAWAY to all the Little Birdie readers, yay!!

Thanks for being here Erica, I hope you'll bear with me as we're doing something new this week. I wanted to ask you a few questions to let my readers get to know you while they're browsing your shop.

First, tell me a little about your shop:

My shop is a hodgepodge of my crafty ideas. It started with bows and bow holders and now includes my bottle cap crafts - magnets, push pins, headbands, and clips. I also added my hand painted ornaments after friends and family loved them the past two Christmases.

How did you get started crafting?

I started crafting in the summer of 2010 after school let out. I had been going to Hobby Lobby and staring at the ribbon section wanting to buy some, but not knowing exactly what I would do with it. On about my 4th trip of looking at the fun designs a lady asked me "Do you make bows too?" I said "Yes. I sure do", bought 4 rolls of ribbon and came home to figure out how to make some bows. I took my creations to a teacher workshop I was attending the next day and people started passing them around and asked if they could order some. I was totally taken by surprise, but gladly took down the orders and the rest is history :) I made ornaments that Christmas as a "different" gift for my big family. This past summer I got into bottle caps and started my Etsy page after a friend's encouragement.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by my desire to make pretty things. That may sound kind of silly, but most of my life I have been frustrated by having all these ideas in my head but not being able to actually take them and turn them into the finished product I had pictured. When I started making my bows, they turned out exactly like I pictured them in my head. It was (is) so exciting to look down and think "Hey that is super cute AND I made it!"

How do you handle being a mom with a full-time job AND an Etsy business?

Juggling a full time job, being a wife and mom, and having an Etsy shop is not always the easiest. I am very lucky to have a wonderful mother and husband who help around the house and with my son so I can have "me time." My 3 month old son also goes to bed at 8 and sleeps through the night, which is a big help! Once I had my son, I made the choice to leave my school work at school as much as possible. I have to use my time at work a lot wiser than I have in years past, so when I come home I can spend time with my family. After dinner and bath time, is my "me time" to work on my crafty projects. There tend to be some late nights, but feeding around the clock a few months ago taught me how to run on a lot less sleep than I used to.

What has been your biggest eye-opener as a first time mom?

My biggest eye opener as a first time mom has been how much time I used to spend on work. I used to stay late, bring work home, and there still seemed to always be things left to do! I have had to really get my time management under control so that I can balance my family and my work. It is amazing how much more I seem to be accomplishing for school in less time.

Isn't she sweet? And she has such an amazingly supportive husband, who thinks she's a total rock-star, as well as the cutest little baby boy! She has so much cute stuff she's been working on and adding into her Etsy shop every day, so be sure to add her to your favorites or your circle so you can keep up with all the cute stuff she's doing. One of my favorite items in her shop are the bottle caps. She makes magnets, clippies, bows, and headbands and is constantly adding new photos to her Facebook page with her fun new ideas. She can also do custom caps for your favorite high school, college, or pro team, as well as fun and funky combinations, sororities, and more!

Erica and I go waaaaaay back to the old college days at Texas Tech in Lubbock. :) So, when I ordered some little piggy tail bows for Aubrey from her, she sent me a custom bottle cap clippy and a magnet for my fridge decked out in custom Tech colors! I was so stoked!

BONUS tutorial! A don't-miss hair care product!

Shake vigorously before use and between sprays for best coverage.
Lift sections of dry hair and spray lightly at roots.
Spray in short bursts, holding 8-12 inches from head.
Don’t spray it like hair spray (all over and continuously).
Leave in for 1-2 minutes.
Use fingertips or a brush to distribute product evenly.
If clogging occurs, remove nozzle and rinse the nozzle under warm water, then reattach.

Tutorial Tuesday & Linky Party - DIY Maxi Dress

Good morning, bloggers! I have a really awesome tutorial to share with you today. I know you're going to be shocked, but it's not something baby-related! It's a full grown sewing project, it's super fast, WAY cheap, and easy enough for anyone to do.

The DIY Maxi Dress

Now, I don't know about you guys but I have had the hardest time letting of my maternity tank tops. I love them. For me, it's comfort and coverage. Being rather, how should I say this... "top heavy" I have always struggled to find tops that can accommodate the load, lol, and offer me some decent coverage without showing my bra straps. Until I got pregnant, I just assumed I would never find this magic tank. Then came the world of maternity clothing. I can't really wear any of it anymore as it all looks funny, but I just couldn't let go of the tanks. So I decided to modify! :)

What makes this project so easy is the fact that you're using an already constructed shirt. No arm holes to sew, no serious measurements, and no trying to pin while wearing. Nice. :)

Materials List

Tank top or t-shirt that fits you well.
1 full yard (at least) of coordinating fabric. I used a jersey knit so it's stretchy and forgiving. ;)

A note on the skirt fabric: I used an entire yard because I planned to ruffle it to give the dress some fullness and movement, and not have it be too fitted. You can use more or less as you like, and as measurements allow.

Coordinating thread. Though it can really be any color because it doesn't show.
The usual suspects: sewing machine, scissors, measuring tape

Here we go... Photos reflect instructions from left to right and top to bottom.

Tutorial Instructions:

Choose your shirt and fabric.
Try on your shirt and make a mark where you want your skirt to start. Then draw a guide line across the shirt and cut through, removing the bottom half.
Since we're using the entire yard, fold the long sides of your fabric together and hem together to make a giant tube. I used a regular running stitch twice, and then serged the ends together for extra sturdiness. You can also use a zig-zag stitch in place of serging.
Next, decide which end of the tube will be your at your waist, and sew a single line all the way around, being careful not to overlap at the seam. Pull the ends of the thread to ruffle until it fits your waist measurement.
Now, turn your tube inside out (if it's not already), and put your tank inside the tube with the right sides facing each other and the open ends matched up. Pin together securely.
Sew together the tank and fabric tube. You can probably use just about any stitch for this, but I used my #9 which is like a slanted zig-zag stitch. This stitch will give you a little stretch, which is good when dealing with knits and jersey fabric.
You can see the finished #9 hem in box #7. Now trim your threads, and any errant fabric.
Turn right side out and inspect your hems.
You can hang and measure for a bottom hem, but it's not necessary. I didn't because for one, jersey doesn't fray so it doesn't need a hem, and secondly, I have such long legs that my whole yard was just about the right length to hit my toes. When it comes to dresses, I like 'em long and swishy!

And that's it! You're finished! How easy was that? Now have fun dressing it up, or wearing it plain... there's nothing this fun maxi dress can't do.

Tutorial Tuesday & Linky Party - Pretty as a Pear

Good morning bloggers!! I have a little cutesy tutorial for you today, something quick and easy that you can whip up in no time.

A Pretty Pear Pincushion

This was a little project born of necessity. The little one is now perfectly capable of reaching pretty much everything on my desk. In the aftermath of a huge pin spill, I thought it high time that I make myself a little pin cushion to keep my sharps safe and out of the way.

I found this pattern online, though I can't be sure where it came from. I am constantly downloading patterns and pulling instructions for projects, even though I already have more bookmarked than I could ever complete in my lifetime, haha!!

Anyway, here it is PLUS an extra pattern for an apple pincushion as well! With some fun and funky fabrics, you could have quite the little bushel here. ;)

Click the pattern to enlarge it in another window, then print.

I'm not sure what the size should be, I just printed as is and went to it!

Materials list:

1, 2, or 3 different fabrics for the body of the pear or apple. You don't need much. I think I used 3 half strips of jelly roll fabric.
Sewing machine or needle and thread- this can TOTALLY be done by hand!
Felt for the leaves. Again, you could easily get away with using scraps.
Poly-fill, sand, or rice for filling.
Hot glue or fabric glue
Coordinating straight pins (optional)

Tutorial Instructions:

Print pattern and cut out pieces.
Cut 6 of each shape (pear or apple) from your fabrics, and one or two leaves (I used felt for these).
Start sewing together the body pieces by placing them right sides together and sewing along ONE EDGE only.
Piece and sew them together this way until you have what looks like an inside-out pear shape.
Sew the opening together (again, inside out) leaving a 1" hole for turning.
Turn right side out and fill. I used rice so it would have a little weight to it, and even threw in some lavender to keep my sewing table smelling lovely.
Sew up your hole and tie off.
You can either hot glue the leaves down or use fabric glue. I'm impatient, so I went the hot glue route. Plus I love hot glue. ;)
If you found some coordinating straight pins, pop those in right on top of the leaves for a little extra accent and you're done!!

Caught in the Texas Wildfires... reaching out for help!

Good morning everyone, I'm just popping in to touch base and apologize for the lack of posts this week. I'll be working toward getting back on schedule for Tutorial Tuesday and What I Pinned {Wednesday} next week. I appreciate your patience and understanding in the meantime.

As many of you know I live in Texas, just north of the Houston area- and if you have been following the news you've probably heard about the wildfires ravaging our beautiful state right now.

Tens of thousands of homes have been burned to the ground, and millions of acres have been scorched. There have also been several confirmed deaths throughout the state, as well as the loss of hundreds of head of horses, cattle, and other animals. Things are not good.

Many have also been evacuated from their homes in an effort to save lives, but even many of these people have lost everything. When a fire takes a home, it takes everything in it. You don't realize how much irreplaceable "stuff" you have until you risk losing it all. Photos, heirlooms, mementos, toys, clothing, furniture... EVERYTHING is just gone.

The thing about central and southeast Texas is that it is HEAVILY wooded. We've also been in an extreme drought for most of the year, so every time one of these fires sparks up it's like setting a match to a haystack, the whole thing goes up in a matter of seconds. For that reason, these fires are proving difficult to contain, and nearly impossible to squelch as they spread mercilessly throughout our state.

My husband and I are uncomfortably close to the fires in our area, but not close enough to be evacuated yet. There are about 50 large fires burning 10-15 miles west of our house, and as long as they don't move much closer we'll be okay. However, you can see the smoke in the air and the sky is hazy with soot so living smack in the middle of 300 acres of forest is not at all comforting.

We have been fortunate so far, but many others have not. Unlike other recent disasters (Irene, flooding, earthquakes, etc.) for some reason, we are not getting any federal funding for this disaster. I'll leave the politics out of it, but let's just say our governor does not have a great relationship with the federal government. Unfortunately, it's our people who are suffering.

So in the true spirit of Texas' neighborly hospitality, we are throwing in together to help those who have lost everything get back on their feet. My husband and his crew is working 'round the clock locally to gather clothes, food, toys, shoes, air mattresses, towels, sheets and other "basics" for those who have lost everything. If you are interested in sending whatever you have, send me an email and I'll give your our mailing address.

I have also created a ChipIn account so those of you who would like to help financially can do so. Even $1 goes a long way to helping such a desperate situation. All proceeds will be donated to the Texas Wildfire Relief Fund based out of Austin, Texas. I will be putting the ChipIn widget up in the sidebar on the right for the foreseeable future, for easy access. It is completely secure, and is protected by Paypal policies and regulations.

Please feel free to share this post as often and wherever you can. Blogger, Facebook, Twitter, wherever. We need help, and those of us who are still standing are working hard to help our neighbors out. There are shelters available to those displaced from their homes, as well as hotels offering their available space for those who might need special assistance, or who have small children. There are also several ranchers offering pasture for displaced animals, or those needing to evacuate their herds.

Tutorial Tuesday - The Cutest Clutch in Town!

Good morning everyone! It's time for another edition of Tutorial Tuesday, complete with linky party fun!

I did {another} sewing project this week. I hope you guys are not getting too tired of the sewing tutorials, I am really coming into my own with my machine and I'm just so excited to try all these new projects. This week I jumped even further out of my comfort zone and tacked the oh-so-scary ZIPPER!!!

I know, just thinking about it used to make me cringe. Now, not so much. I'm excited about all the new projects I can do now with my new zipper skillz. {That's right, I spelled it with a z... because that's how mad my skills are. ;)} What do you think? Introducing...

The Cutest Clutch in Town

{a.k.a. The Aviary Clutch}

A friend and I were talking the other day when Joel Dewberry's Aviary 2 collection came up. It inspired me to pull out my little Aviary 2 stash and make myself something lovely. :) I'm a sucker for purple, and turquoise is currently holding 2nd in that poll, so this collection is right up my alley.

I found the tutorial on the Noodlehead blog, so you can pop over there to check out the details, but I made some adjustments so give you a quick rundown here, too. :)

Here's what you need:

Materials List:

1. Fabrics of choice- I used 4 different fabrics, but you can use as few as two.

Main front fabric: one 5.5" tall by 9" wide, and one 5.5" tall by 13" wide (the longer piece will be the gathered/ruffled front)
Front band: one piece 4" tall by 9" wide.
Lining: two pieces 5.5" tall by 9" wide
Zipper end covers: two pieces 1.5" tall by 2.5" wide.
Medium weight fusible interfacing: (2) 5.5" tall by 9" wide (for fusing to inside of exterior pieces of clutch)

{Optional Pieces}

Divider pocket: one piece 8" tall by 9" wide (apply interfacing to half, you'll need a 4" x 9" piece)
Card holders: one piece 7" tall by 9" wide (apply interfacing to half, you'll need a 3.5" x 9" piece)
Cash pocket: one piece 5" tall by 9" wide (apply interfacing to half, you'll need a 2.5" x9" piece)

2. Zipper. Can be longer and cut down, but finished size will need to be 8.5" long

3. Medium weight fusible Interfacing (see above for measurement details)

4. Coordinating thread

Now as far as the basic pattern goes, I followed the Noodlehead tutorial pretty much to a T. And she's got some great pics to go along with the steps too.

I took some liberties when it came to the inside. I like pockets in my wallet/purse so I had to make some.

I took the large "divider" piece (folded over and fused), and top stitched about 1/4" from the folded edge then top stitched another row 1/4" below that. Next, I basted the sides of the piece to one side of the lining.

Next, I took the 7"x9" piece folded it over and fused it together and top stitched it the same way as the first piece. I then basted the ends to the other piece of lining.

This is where it gets personal. ;) Depending on what you're going to be using the pockets for, the measurements for the stitching will be different. I wanted to have credit card pockets, a pocket for my business cards, and a pocket to hold my chap stick so I used each of those things to help me measure off the sections.

I also added a shorter pocket in front of the larger set of pockets for stowing cash in. That's the 5"x9" piece, just fold it in half and fuse it the same way as the others and sew it on in front of your first set of pockets.

Just to make myself feel good, I also sewed in one of my tags. You know, so it's custom. ;)

Finish following the Noodlehead tutorial and you should be all set!!

Tips for this Tutorial:

When sewing together your lining, leave a larger seam allowance than you did when sewing together your outside pieces. (ex. 1/4" seam allowance on outside pieces, 3/4" seam allowance on lining.) This just helps the lining and pockets fit nicely into the clutch without bunching up.
If I were doing this project again, I would make the front ruffled part 5.5" x 15" instead of 13" so I could have better ruffles. Who doesn't like more ruffles? ;)

Merchandise Monday - Updates to The Little Birdie Shop!

A banner day for The Little Birdie!

So, obviously I was excited about my little feature on Sugar Bee this morning, but it doesn't stop there! I came back to the computer after putting Baby A down for her morning nap and I had the sweetest message from Stephanie at My Lil Pumpkin Patch letting me know she had given me "The Versatile Blogger" award. I feel so loved today!!

Stephanie is a recent addition to our bloggy bud friends, and I'm so excited that she's enjoying The Little Birdie so much. You are so sweet, Steph! Now it's my turn to share this award with some of my new favorites!

Here are some things about me that you may not know:

1. I have a few weird and irrational fears, e.g. raccoons clawing through the screens while the windows are open, the ceiling fan falling out of the ceiling and chopping my legs off while I sleep, the hair monster in the shower drain. I know, I know. I said they were irrational, haha!

2. I have an ANCIENT kitty cat that I've had since I was 12 years old. He must be like 200 in cat years by now.

3. I am the definition of "a creature of habit." Routines keep me sane, and keep me on track. Maybe that makes me a little bit OCD, but whatevs. Girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. ;)

4. My kiddo is nearly 15 months old and I'm still taking my prenatal vitamins. I kinda thought that it must be a good habit, and any vitamin is better than no vitamin, right? (remember what I said about routines? LOL!)

5. Hubby and I find it immeasurably hilarious to do "voice over commentary" for our little Jack Russell, Tina. She's so cute and silly all the time so the hilarity is already there, plus I have a "Tina voice" that just comes naturally so it just makes good sense.

6. I have pinned and bookmarked more projects, recipes, and design ideas than I could ever do in 5 lifetimes, and yet I still keep at it.

7. I absolutely love getting mail, but since "becoming an adult" I have found that mail really isn't all that great. It's mostly bills, solicitations, and crappy grocery mailers. One of my favorite things about The Little Birdie is how much real, actual mail it has brought into my life. I love getting notes from etsy buyers, test product from new vendors, pretty fabrics from new designers, and anything and everything else that people send me!

Tutorial Tuesday - Cutie Booties!

Hey everyone! Welcome to Tuesday! I am really excited to show you what I've been working on lately. I've been on a roll making baby shoes. :)

It was a pretty big leap for me, but I'm glad I did it. I feel more confident about my sewing and less afraid to try something new/harder. As much as I would love to share this pattern with you, I purchased it from a fellow etsy seller as a "one per person" thing. What I Pinned {Wednesday}

It may have been a couple of weeks since I've posted a "What I Pinned {Wednesday}," but rest assured I have still been pinning like crazy! Right now I'm kind of on a bathroom kick. I think it's because every time I'm in our bathroom I'm dreaming of ways to fix it up and make it more suitable to our my taste.

Our master bath has some seriously hideous wallpaper. Not just wallpaper, but floor-to-ceiling wallpaper AND a floral border. I know. It's all rose and hunter green, circa 1990's. But it has an amazingly huge (and deep!) garden tub, and plenty of room to play, so I'm on the hunt for some awesome inspiration. Here are some incredible bathrooms I've found and pinned recently.

We won't be doing anything drastic like re-tiling or flooring, but I LOVE these colors and those scalloped tiles are absolutely incredible! Look at the detailing in the flooring!

I love the rustic feel of this bathroom. The barn wood covered wall and natural stone tub structure make me feel all earthy and cozy inside, haha! It's perfect with a little greenery, and white accents.

Speaking of earthy, check out this eclectic tiling pattern. It's so natural looking, and I just love the "randomness" of the pattern. P.S. I think the sink would be awesome in any bathroom!

Huge tub AND a fireplace? 'Nuff said...

Another "natural" bathroom... I love the open concept, and the pebble flooring with the stone walls would make me feel like I was showering in my waterfall again!

I love the contrast in this bathroom. The grey is stark but soft and the white allows the natural elements (the basket, wood bench, plants, etc.) in this room to stand out.

So far, I think this is my most realistic favorite. We wouldn't have to change too much, but it would give the bathroom a much needed facelift. The green is so fresh, and when coupled with the white it just brightens up the whole space.

Tutorial Tuesday & Linky Party - An Old Fashioned Sleepover

Well... not actually. But that's what it felt like! My very own bestie came to visit me yesterday all the way from Lubbock. Well, actually her and her man were down this way visiting his fam, so she stole away for the day to come and hang out with me and Baby A. We spent the afternoon chatting away, playing with my little Baby A, and doing things that girls do. Like my hair. It almost reminded me of when we were 13 and staying up late watching Princess Bride and talking about boys. :)

Did any of you see Lauren Conrad's funky July 4th hair on her blog the beauty department this month? We did. It was incredible! And as often happens, we were instantly in love and had to try it out. Unfortunately, since Lauri is still growing out her bob from last year, I am the only one with hair long enough to give it a go at the moment. But just wait 6 months and we'll be back with pictures of her hair too! ;)

I LOVE IT!

We could not have been happier with the way it turned out. Especially since we were both new to the whole self-bleaching thing. Thank goodness, I would have hated to post to you today about how we burned my hair off last night, haha! Hopefully I can get some better pics when the hubbs gets home from work later. It's kind of hard taking pictures of your own hair... especially when it's soooo long.

If you want to try it out, the beauty department has their tutorial HERE. Of course, I am always happy to answer questions if you need me to! Luckily, I got lots of great info from the lady at Sally's Beauty Supply, so if you purchase your goods there don't be afraid to ask for help!

These are the colored dyes that I used. They came highly recommended by Sally's lady, and they're supposed to have great holding power. They're also really vibrant, and that was a huge plus for me. I think Sally's had about 15 different colors in this brand:

We only ended up using a tiny bit, so I probably have enough dye to do this another 50 times, haha!

Precious "Little Birdies"... New model photos!

Have I ever told you guys how much I love getting photos from etsy buyers? It's seriously one of the biggest perks of the job. It never fails to put a smile on my face every single time.

This week I got some of the most adorable pictures from Brandy in Maryland of her TWIN nieces that she sent Little Birdie onesies to. Brandy actually won our Facebook contest back in March, and she picked matching Monogrammed Angel Wings onesies to send to her nieces. Check out how precious these two Little Birdies are.

Tutorial Tuesday & Linky Party - A Little Taste

Tutorial Tuesday & Linky Party - Easy Gathered Dress

Good morning bloggy buds! I am coming to you this morning with a brand spankin' new tutorial! Yay! While I was on hiatus, and in preparation for Baby A's first birthday, I tried my hand at making clothing. Yes... an actual, wearable garment! {Are you getting the sense that I was pretty dang proud of myself? I was. Am. haha!} Check it out...

Baby A's 1st Birthday Dress

This was pretty easy overall, just a little time consuming with all the gathering. Luckily, there's a little something that makes the whole ruched top easier... elastic thread! It looks like this, and can be found with all the notions at your local fabric shop/Hobby Lobby.

Otherwise, all you need are these things:

2, 21" square pieces of fabric (this fits my 1 year old larely)

elastic thread

regular thread

fabric scraps or foldover elastic for straps (optional)

Now, before you get started you'll have to wind your bobbin. Yes, by hand. :) Elastic thread is tricky and won't work with your machine's bobbin winder. So wind your bobbin, not too tight, but not too loose either. Don't worry, it doesn't have to be perfect, mine sure wasn't! haha!

First, take your fabric squares and hem 2 opposite sides 1/2" each. This will make your ruffle-y top look better, and of course give you a nice hemline at the bottom of the dress.

Next, we'll be ruffling each square separately. You want to bring your stitch length out as far as it will go on your running stitch setting to help your fabric ruffle on it's own. Sew 12 lines, 1/2" apart, starting 1/2" from the hem of the fabric. Be sure to sew with the patterned side of the fabric UP, so you will only see the elastic thread from the back side.

You can see here I was about 6 rows in and the fabric is already pretty scrunched up. My lines aren't all that straight, but in the end, it doesn't really matter since it's all scrunched up anyway. So sew 12 rows on each square of hemmed fabric.

Then, put your 2 squares together print side in and pin together leaving a 1/2" allowance for your seams. Sew along each edge in a straight line all the way to the bottom. Trim any loose threads or excess fabric, turn right side out and you're done!! Easy peasy!!

To finish it off, I added some fold over elastic to the inside of the front panel to make it a little halter dress. That part is totally optional, but my kiddo would just pull it down without the straps, haha!

I also whipped up a little matching headband for her to wear using the same brown fold over elastic as I used for the straps. I just made a little white felt flower and hot glued it right on there. Also easy peasy. :)

Merchandise Monday Returns!! {with a giveaway!!}

As you all know I have been frantically working on my etsy shop, trying to get everything in order for the summer and adding lots of new items for sale! Since Merchandise Monday started out as a way to showcase etsy sellers and products, I thought I would just go ahead and show you what I've been working on... at least a little bit of what I've been working on anyway. :)

I've been churning out the "boy" styles like crazy! I've never been inspired to do much boy stuff before, but for some reason the ideas just keep flowing. I'm sure you guys know how scarce the cute boy stuff is anyway, so it's a good thing! Here's a couple of new designs I added this week:

This one is inspired by all the summer fun cropping up everywhere, and by my very own water baby. What could be better than a simple sailboat on a navy tye dyed bodysuit for baby's summer wardrobe?

Of course there's never a shortage of girlie styles too... Here's a couple of the more feminine designs I added to the shop since re-opening:

I am ALL OVER the teal/aqua/turquoise trend right now... though I had no idea it was a trend when I was designing this little beauty about 3 months ago. :) Aside from the color itself, I love this design because it reminds me of some really awesome retro-floral wallpaper!!

{Fancy Little Miss}

Much like the "Fancy Little Man," what girl goes out without her bling on? Exactly! Now, this one is kind of a work in progress. I'm loving it on some other colors (purple, teal) and playing with some rhinestone embellishments as well. Stay tuned on this one!

Some with little birdies, some with elephants, but all pack on the charm for a fun and unique baby shower gift. Included is a matching bib, burp cloth and plush toy in designer fabric rolled together and tied with some jute, ready to gift! I've got about a dozen sets in a dozen different fabrics, so these will be popping up here and there for as long as they last. :)

Well I've been cleaning, reorganizing, taking inventory, and all of that fun stuff and what did I come up with? A BUNCH of STUFF!! What I Pinned {Wednesday}

I'm kind of liking this new little tradition I've started here on Wednesdays, so I think I'm going to keep it up! In case I haven't mentioned it before {um, like, a MILLION times...} I'm addicted to Pinterest. Since I've been lax on my blogging and etsy and everything else while we've been working on the new house, I take at least a little comfort in playing Pinterest and lurking all over blogland, haha!

The most UNBELIEVEABLE month of my life. {True Story}

I hate getting too personal on my blog. I know there is so much room for problems to arise when I open up myself, but I just have to share/vent with you all about the last month of insanity in my life. It's so unbelievable I don't even know how to write about it without it sounding like a bad mini-series plot. But I will do my best...

...

You already know we decided to move. It was one of those completely random things that just popped up, and was too, too awesome of an opportunity to pass on. That's where it all started. Because of the timing and various other factors, we had about 12 days to pack our entire house and get this done. Okay. No big deal, right? It was stressful and insane, and I had NO IDEA we had SO MUCH CRAP.

So the packing continues... all the while I'm trying to plan guest blogs, finish up my etsy shop orders, close down my shop and pack up all my "Little Birdie" paraphernalia. Somewhere in this period of 12 days, I find out about 18 of my already shipped out orders have just disappeared. {INSERT PANIC ATTACK}

I'm emailing buyers, I'm calling the post office, I'm calling Paypal, I'm doing anything I can think of while I UNPACK my shop and try to re-make all of these orders to be re-sent out. Before we move. I am beside myself... completely.

Come to find out, our mail person has been stealing/stashing/doing who-knows-what with the mail for weeks. WEEKS. I had no idea that ACTUALLY happened in real life. Thankfully, there were others in our route who had the same problems, enabling the USPS to identify the problem, arrest the mail carrier and launch an investigation in hopes of tracking down all the "lost" mail and pressing federal fraud charges against her. All of my U.S. orders go out via carrier pick up, so I knew then I was totally screwed. More emailing, more phone calls...

Finally I have to re-pack all the Little Birdie stuff, keeping aside all the unfinished business of the previous predicament so I can jump right in when we land at our new home.

At last we reach the weekend of the big move...

FRIDAY: We move. YAY! {but there was only a short celebration...} The cable company screwed up the internet installation. Then they mis-charged us for what we ordered. {insert phone battle} 3 days later, all is well.

SATURDAY: rest

SUNDAY: more rest {seriously, it was like I was in a walking coma... too much work/stress leading to the move and I just could not go anymore.}

MONDAY: Finished tying up all the loose ends from the USPS fiasco. Luckily my buyers are all incredibly understanding about it all, but I send them free gifts anyway for not kicking me to the curb. :) Whew. Then.. Oh crap, we're all supposed to go out of town tomorrow. {insert frantic packing} Of course, never mind the fact that we've never made a road trip, or any kind of long distance/long time trip for that matter with the baby. Let alone BY MYSELF for 8 hours with the baby AND the dog.

TUESDAY: Load up the car and leave, 7:30AM

Now the next several days were not so bad. Surprisingly, the drive wasn't horrible and the baby was mellow and cool as always. I should never doubt her awesomeness. Also, I got to hang with my totally awesome parents, they got some great quality time with Baby A, and I got some MUCH NEEDED R&R while Grampa and GiGi took the reins.

We head back home about a week later, another easy trip with an angel baby. Thank you, Lord.

Once we're home, the in-laws decide to bestow an incredible gift upon us. A brand new set of front-loading washer/dryers! Absolutely incredible! They're ordered and expected to arrive in under 2 weeks. We unload the old set that is seriously on it's last thread, and wait excitedly.

FRIDAY: Delivery guys arrive. With TWO washing machines and no dryer. More phone calls... no one knows what happened. Also, no one knows how to fix it.

Many, many, MANY phone calls later the problem is resolved and a new dryer on order to arrive in about 2 more weeks. Ugh. Luckily, we were able to coerce Best Buy into loaning us a dryer in the meantime, as we had already been without laundry for 2 weeks waiting on the first set, and there was NO WAY we were going to make it another 2 weeks. Let' just say this: Don't mess with a chick and her laundry.

At this point, I'm thinking: "Okay, I'm going to start moving towards reopening my shop." I start unpacking and working, and start writing some blogs again just to get back in the swing of things.

YESTERDAY: New dryer has made it to the warehouse in town and is ready for delivery. Oh wait, they ahve the wrong address somehow!! Operator lady tells me it will take 2 WEEKS to fix the paperwork and submit the address change. Seriously? Changing a delivery address takes 2 weeks? Come on!! {More phone calls...}

TODAY: Best Buy finally has their act together, and tells the delivery company to get theirs together too. Delivery scheduled for Tuesday. Almost a month later.

Plus, there were alot of "little" things that happened too...

Old washer leaked all over the laundry room. Ruined baseboards.

Old dryer goes on the fritz, shrinks all of hubby's work clothes.

Printer stopped working. No idea why.

Dog got fleas. Trip to vet. Treated house and yard.

Baby's first birthday. Mommy frantically trying to put together a nice party. (Success! Pics to come!)

Oh yeah, did I mention that we are also in the middle of a HUGE drought in Texas? We are. Like, big red signs about getting-arrested-if-you're-even-seen-lighting-a-match, huge. As much as it's an inconvenience, it's not a big deal in day-to-day life. It does, however, affect the weather. It's literally too hot to rain. Instead, we get huge thunder bumping clouds, crazy lightning, and the best part... rolling black outs. When it's 100+ degrees outside. For days. Not cool... in more than one way.

Needless to say, shop opening is postponed while we figure out a way to deal with the heat, and the sporadic cutting in and out of electricity and subsequently, internet access. I'm really, REALLY starting to get down on myself because things just keep coming at us. I'm feeling like I'm never going to get my shop opened back up, my blog is all but abandoned, and the most ego-damaging part: I'm seeing my readership decline. :( I worked hours and hours a day {day and night really} to make my blog an interesting place to visit, now I feel like I'm having to start over.

Clearly we've had some issues in the past 6 weeks. Things I could have NEVER in my wildest dreams foreseen, and yet I am still optimistic. I suppose I am offering up this post as an apology. An apology for not getting it together sooner. An apology for letting life knock me down at your expense. However, this is also a promise. I'm posting it here so I am accountable. The following is my pledge to you all:

I am seriously pulling my sh*t together this weekend and getting things back on track.

Simple as that. I refuse to let anything else get in the way of allowing me to get back to doing what I love: creating. It's going to be a process for sure, and I have lots of ideas of how to be better, so I hope the 213 of you that are left here will stick around to see it. I miss you all terribly... Thanks for sticking it out with me. :)

For now I will leave you with this...

The night we moved in, I dug out these elements specifically to help us get off on the right foot in our new home. Love, Happiness, and some good smellin' Scentsy. ;) It's amazing what a pretty and meaningful vignette can do for your outlook every day. Even my sweet-but-usually-oblivious-to-decor hubby took notice right away. I'll spare you the details but sweet kisses ensued as he told me how much he loved me and was so happy to be starting the next phase of our lives together in our new home.

Traditionally, baby showers were intended to be a time where mothers can share their wisdom on parenthood. For most of us though, it’s the day we announce and shout to the world, “I’m having a baby!” If you are throwing a baby shower sometime soon, here are some tips so that yours will be as meaningful as your pregnancy.

Think Theme.

When I had my baby shower approximately 2 years ago, I had a theme—“life is what you paint it.” I wanted an artistic event where people can express their creativity as they welcome my baby. So I bought blank canvasses and made them table cloths during the shower. People can draw and write anything they want my baby to see on the canvasses while they eat and chat with me. I placed different palettes of paint on each of the tables and lots of brushes, which they can take home as shower souvenirs or party giveaways. Most of my friends are artists and humanities people so the guests had fun! So that’s the key—know who you are and express that in the baby shower, if you are a musician, go for a theme that will echo that part of you. This is your baby shower, so it’s all about you.

Consider Potluck.

A lot of people don’t want to have kids because of they feel that they’re still financially incapable. Really, having a baby can be demanding monetarily. So as much as you can, save, save, save. Ask your friends to bring food and drinks for the baby shower. But the catch is, every food they will give will symbolize something. It’s like your own version of the gift of the Magi. I’m sure your friends will be excited about this idea!

Plan activities.

It will be fun to have games during the shower. Of course, it’s great if the game has something to do with motherhood and babies. The bottom line is to perk up your guests and make them happy. Making your guests happy will make this a memorable experience.

Making your baby shower meaningful and unforgettable is just easy—just let your imagination soar to put your creativity at its peak!

Tutorial Tuesday with Tori from Busy B Family!

Welcome back everyone! We are finally all moved in, and have some MUCH needed internet access. I have seriously been having withdrawals for the last week. Ack! So without further ado, I would like to turn this week's Tutorial Tuesday over to the super sweet Tori from Busy B Family. Take it away Tori!

Hello all Little Birdie Blog readers! I’m Tori from Busy B Family and Rachael was kind enough to let me invade her space today! I started my blog as a “scrapbook” when my little boy was a few months old and instead of having a separate blog for crafts, I just throw them on here every once in a while! (So if you go there and don’t want to see my kids, just click on crafts and you can see them there!) Before having my own blog, I was strictly a blog stalker for years, which was great but I LOVE having a little outlet for creativity and memories all in one place.

A few months ago I had a whole bunch of those cute little mini cereal boxes and made some storage box magnets for my fridge. They were SO easy and quick, and I have gotten so many compliments on them! Even better, you really can use stuff laying around your house to decorate them!

After making those, I thought it would be nice to have a specific place to put all those pesky take out menu’s from restaurant's. Cause if you’re anything like me, I never can seem to find the one I need when I want it! So why not make something?! So, here we go!

For mine, I used a graham cracker box and Pop Tart box (since I’m a good daughter, my mom gets one!)

Here’s the supplies you’ll need:

Boxes –whatever size you want!

Cute paper

Glue stick (or Mod Podge – that’s what I used on the cereal boxes, either are fine!)

Magnets

Decorations of your liking

Letters of some kind

Transfer paper

I cut the top off the box and about another 3/4 of an inch

Mark on your paper about where you’ll need the height to be

Cut your strip and glue it on

Go ahead and glue it around the sides and onto the back. I used 12” paper and this is how far around the back it wrapped. It’s okay that it doesn’t cover, cause you’ll never see the back!

I originally cut out 2 strips of contrasting paper but only ended up using one

This is what it will look like after gluing your paper on

For the Pop Tart box, I did the same thing.

I added a few decorative stick on jewels to each box and then got my letters ready.

I used my Make the Cut software for the letters and cut them out on my Cricut (love that thing!).

After peeling off the excess vinyl, use either transfer tape or contact paper to stick it on your box

I had a leftover magnet sheet, so that’s what I used but you could use any type of magnet, just make sure they’re strong enough to stay up!

Cut it close to the size of the back of your box

Mine has a sticky back but you can definitely use hot glue to attach it

Here it is compared to my original mini cereal boxes

And the final products!

Easy enough right? And best of all, you can pretty much use up your scraps and recycle your kids snack boxes and breakfast cereal boxes!

My next idea? I wonder if file folders would fit in a regular size cereal box (ya know, turned on its side?)? I think it would be great for each family member to have their own folder, so you’d always know where “stuff” was! hmmm.

A little snag...

Good morning all! I have some lovely guest posts lined up for you all in the coming weeks, however, I've hit a bit of a snag.

We're moving Friday, but the cable company somehow got their wires crossed and disconnected our cable and internet two days early. Ugh. So for now I am working with limited access via my phone, haha!

Just about all I can do is post my own text (from a touch screen that I am terrible at, no less), so our first feature guest post and resurrection of tutorial tuesday will start next tuesday!

Have you heard??

I have to share this site with you all, and I'm sure many of you have heard the buzz around blog land already, but bear with me because I. AM. IN. LOVE.

Pinterest lets you bookmark all of your favorite things in one place, organize them effortlessly, and share them with your friends. Awesome, right?

I personally have been struggling with my bookmarks lately, as there are literally thousands of them, and not only are they difficult to keep organized, but they're also just text. My favorite thing about Pinterest is that it displays your bookmarks, or "pins," by photo so you can easily see what's what.

Now, I'm not really sure how the whole sign up thing works at this point. But it seems that you have to have an "invitation" to come in and play. I'm not 100% sure on that, so don't quote me, but if you leave me your email address in a comment, I will happily invite you myself!! It sort of works like twitter, where you can see all the pins of someone you "follow" so you're always getting updates and fresh content.

BEWARE: you can seriously spend hours pinning all your favorite sites, projects, tutorials, products, etc. when you really should be packing since you're moving in 9 days... Um, yeah. So just be careful. ;)

BIG news!!

Hi everyone!! So guess what? We got the house!! :) {don't know what I'm talking about? See HERE} And, in an even more exciting twist of fate, we've decided to jump right in and try to get moved by May 15th. Wow, right? I'm already up to my elbows in boxes and packing tape and it's only day 1!

This is my mantra for the next 2 weeks: I'm not stressing, I'm not stressing, I'm not stressing... I've already repeated it to myself about 100 times today, haha!

So... that means I need guest bloggers! I want to keep the posts coming for you guys, but I just don't know how much time I'll have to be working on it, plus with all my studio stuff packed up I wouldn't even be ABLE to work on any new projects until we get settled in the new place.

If you're interested, this is more or less what I'm looking for:

Taking a break!

Boy am I busy today. It's always the last day before the show when I get the most done. However, I needed a little break so I thought I would come visit.

Despite all the craziness going on around here this week {including me having a back spasm, paperwork deadlines, and Baby A cutting her first top tooth} I have really only been thinking about one thing...

A new house.

I haven't told anyone else this because nothing is for sure yet, but I have to admit I am distracted and daydreaming thinking about a house we looked at this week. I have been on pins and needles for DAYS waiting to find out if we're going to get it, but I can't help daydreaming. Do you do that?

I mean, as of now we have nothing set in stone but already I'm dreaming of decorating, new furniture projects, and the new aspects of life that come with a move. Oh, but I haven't even told you the best part yet...

If we get this house, I will finally have A STUDIO!!! I have soooooo many ideas....

{Can you tell I like bright, airy spaces with bold pops of color? LOL}

No more working out of the corner of our bedroom, no more tripping over boxes of fabric and incoming merchandise and review pieces everywhere. Hubby and I will finally have a whole room to pursue our creative endeavors! So needless to say I am totally keeping my fingers crossed, praying praying and praying some more, and trying to stay positive all the while also trying not to get my hopes up too high on this.

There are about 100 reasons why this would be a perfect situation for us, so we are both hoping for the best! The owners are super nice, and said they would let us know something this weekend so hopefully we hear something soon!

For now I guess I'll get back to work sewing, dyeing, and packaging... but rest assured I'll be daydreaming all the while... :)

They sent me a coupon to try one of their new "Simply Inspired" Pizzas, made with fresh, interesting, GROWN UP ingredients. {Wait! You mean there IS more to the frozen section that just fish sticks and chicken nuggets??} So, off to the store I went.

Can you say, YUM?!?

First of all, there is a wide array of choices in the FRESCHETTA ® Simply…Inspired™ line... they come in flavors like I've never seen in frozen pizza. Tuscan Farmhouse, Classic Bruschetta, Harvest Supreme, and even Hawaiian Style with pineapple! I went with the Chicken Bianco: grilled chicken, roasted red peppers, spinach and black olives topped with mozzarella cheese and creamy alfredo sauce.

IT. WAS. DIVINE.

One thing I noticed more than anything was there was no ice or freezer burn on the pizza. I've never bought anything frozen that wasn't crusted in ice. They must have some seriously awesome packaging or something. And no rubbery crust here, no, no. Crispy, flaky, baked-to-perfection thin crust. Yum. This is not your run-of-the-mill Chuck-E-Cheese pizza. This is pizza the way it was meant to be enjoyed when you're over 20, haha!
